Good fun if you're twelve and think that love excuses everything. But once you get older, you'll start to realise that this isn't romantic. This isn't romantic at all. The only difference between the actions of Kyo and all the other men who target Misao is that Misao is in love with Kyo. The fact that she is in love with Kyo means it's ok for him to manipulate and abuse her, control her life, forbid her from seeing people she's friends with, keep important information about her life and wellbeing from her, invade her privacy, make sexual advances the second she turns sixteen, force her into a corner until she agrees to marry him and bear his children and then top it off by acting like that's all good for her. The fact that Misao is in love with Kyo means their relationship is healthy and she should be allowed to stay with him. I can't believe that every single character in this manga seems to believe the above and subsequently have complete disregard for Misao's mental health, emotional wellbeing and human rights, and instead regard her merely as an object. Including Kyo. Scrub that. Especially Kyo. I don't care if he loves her. He needs to be arrested.

Now I'm a little concerned on what I liked at that age. There really isn't a plot in this story nor are there any character development within this manga series. Black Bird in a nutshell is the head of the Tengu clan named Kyo trying to kill anyone who gets in between him and Misao who is the Senka or the Holy Fruit just to get into her pants. Black Bird in a nutshell is the head of the Tengu clan named Kyo trying to kill anyone who gets in between him and Misao who is the Senka or the Holy Fruit just to get into her pants. I wouldn't have a problem with this series if Kyo wasn't a controlling, abusive, sex fiend. He touches her when she doesn't want to be touched, makes snide remarks about sleeping with her and shows signs of him being a control freak. One example is when she is taking a bath and he gives her his clothes because he "doesn't want her to wear clothes of another man." Other examples are when she has her mind on something other than him he "punishes" her by kissing her and doing what he pleases with her body even when she protests. Another one is when she is unconscious and he is kissing her body, I mean her naked body. After I read that part I was trying not to rip the book in half. It was from the library and I didn't want to pay a fee. Plus no matter how bad a book is, I do not have the heart to damage it. Is this suppose to be romantic or funny? Because I don't find it cute, funny, or romantic when a man touches a woman when she does not want to be touched or when he makes her uncomfortable. I will give Misao credit because she doesn't love him at first and wants nothing to do with him even though he is a handsome man. One thing is that she believes that he doesn't want her for who she is but because she is the Holy Fruit and she has every right to believe that. She has enough brains to slap him, kick his knee, or push him away when she says no every time he advances on her. Kyo is a creepy sex fiend but to his credit, he does care about Misao and during his childhood he worked hard to make sure he was the head of the house so he could marry her. To my surprise he didn't love her at first sight. He actually had to grow in order to love her. But his advances (which he inherited from his father by the way) annoy the hell out of me and the main heroine. I know the author's intentions were to bring humor when Misao slaps Kyo but honesty . . . I don't see the humor. Some of the other characters are pretty decent they each have their unique personality and have different back stories. But we don't get to meet them until volume 2. To the story's credit, the story line and setup for this series was actually pretty impressive and seemed to be really good. A romance between a girl who is this Holy Fruit and a demon who makes a choice between loving her for who she is or taking her to bring prosperity to his clan. It actually sounds like a good story but the problem again is the way Kyo treats Misao. Was this series bad? Yes. Yes it was.

The 'relationships' in this book are gross. The whole premise is that this girl is super-power for demons. If they eat her, drink or blood or marry her they get stronger. She gets no power out of this. She is inept at anything and is constantly being hurt by even minor demons. She has no real power to stop the human looking heads of clans that come to marry her. One of the demons 'loves' her enough that he is protecting her and has not tried to force himself on her physically (much) but he comes out with winning lines like "You can't live without me. I have to teach your body that." A page later he is licking her wounds (all over her body) while she is passed out. The whole book creates this weird bondage-light vibe where the girl is always getting hurt so the main Demon love interest can lick her better, carry her in his arms, make caveman remarks about how she better hurry up and belong to him, etc. There is a deeper strain of 'they were childhood friends and he was her first 'love' when she was five or six but it is not enough to redeem the nasty themes in this book. It is the worst of the grossness in Twilight except this main character has LESS of a spine. An insult to women and a bad message to young girls, this is one manga series publishers should have left in Japan.

"If a monster drinks my blood, his life will be prolonged. If he eats my flesh he will never grow old, he'll be immortal. If he takes me for his wife, his whole clan will prosper." Misao has become the Holy Fruit for demons and because of that she's become the target of Demon Clans. I like the premise enough but I just can't stand the perverseness of this manga. Oh sure the smut is hot but I just don't like perverted leading men and guys who use force on women. Shoujo manga is supposed to be read "If a monster drinks my blood, his life will be prolonged. Shoujo manga is supposed to be read but young girls so basically it's like a Young Adult book but I think the content in this manga is not really appropriate for young girls. I sorta skimmed through some chapters, I'm amazed I've finished the whole 18 volumes, I said to myself I'm just gonna give it up after 10 volumes but the story got interesting for me and the ending satisfied me so I guess it was not so bad after all. I definitely won't recommend this book to young girls because of the smut and I hate it because some of the volume covers shows that the male MC ties the girl or chokes her, that didn't happen in the actual manga, he's just a perverted asshole but has his sweet side too ... I guess this is one of those guilty pleasure manga reads ... LOL^^

3. I honestly don't know how to review this manga. I want to say it's the worst I've ever read, but that would be disingenuous - certain elements are the worst I've ever read, but certain elements are quite good. Perhaps I could say that I wanted to like this, but that certain elements prevented me. But that wouldn't be quite right either. Quite frankly, this book looks like it would be a stupid romance - I have no idea why I bought it. Perhaps I could say that I wanted to like this, but that certain elements prevented me. But that wouldn't be quite right either. Quite frankly, this book looks like it would be a stupid romance - I have no idea why I bought it. Truly, the nature of this book prevents me from introducing it properly. Here's the thing: there's a lot of abuse here. Misao, throughout the book, is treated like an object by Kyo, the demon that she's getting married to. He forces her to marry him (indirectly threatening her life if she refuese), he touches her breasts and puts his hands up her skirt without consent, he shoves her against walls, he forbids her from seeing other men, and he licks her while she's asleep. It's difficult to tell whether this is supposed to be okay or not. On one hand, Misao is certainly uncomfortable with it at first. She makes her discomfort clear (not that it affects Kyo's decision-making much), and she doesn't want to marry him at first. But she seems to relent, over time. Not like she's giving up, like she's genuinely falling in love with him. There's the subtle implication that because Kyo protecting her from other demons, the shit he does is okay, which is... uncomfortable to say the least. Kyo does claim to love Misao, but it's hard to believe, considering how he treats her, combined with the fact that he has ulterior motives for marrying her. (Basically, his tribe prospers if she's his bride.) All of this makes it incredibly depressing when Misao starts to see merit in him. Don't get be wrong, the unfortunate truth is that a lot of people in abusive relationships have some love for their abusers. But the way it's presented... Misao's love appears to be, by my assessment, not just okay, but Meant To Be. Perhaps it would be unfair to assess this manga mostly based on the central relationship, if it weren't the only focus of the book. I'm not saying this book is plotless - I'll get to that later - but the manga is quite defined by the romance. Misao has very little character development outside of it - we know virtually nothing about her except that she sees demons, and that she's in an abusive relationship. Kyo is the same, largely. It's Misao's lack of character development that makes me feel like this manga wasn't meant to be some sort of metaphorical exploration of abuse - if it were, I feel like the manga would be very intimate with Misao's personality. Alas, we knew virtually nothing about it. And the really frustrating thing - the thing that makes this manga so difficult to introduce - is the fact that other than all this, it's actually pretty good. Sure, it starts off a bit rushed, but once it finds its pacing, it actually ebbs and flows surprisingly well. There's a very fluid nature to how Sakurakouji writes her scenes - we often jump around in time within chapters, and it's often unclear as to whether something really happened, or if it was all Misao's dream. You'd think this would make the book confusing, but it had a more mysterious affect - it kept me on my toes. The plot - mostly revolving around a love triangle between two equally abusive demons - wasn't actually that interesting, but it was written extremely well. The dialogue was quite well-written, in spite of everything, and the flashbacks to Misao's childhood with Kyo were genuinely touching, even though they shouldn't have been. Moreover, the artwork was wonderful (which is the reason I bought the book in the first place). It wasn't exactly subtle, but it was very crisp, and it got its points across alright. Sakurakouji is clearly a capable writer, and I wish she had a better story to tell here. Alas, it mostly seems to be normalization of horrifying abuse. Much like Twilight, if Stephanie Meyers weren't a terrible writer. I can't recommend this, and I didn't enjoy it enough to be tempted to read anything else by Sakurakouji. But if the premise looks interesting to you, I'd suggest reading another book by the author - she's clearly prolific enough for there to be something else interesting.

For she is a special human with special blood, and every demon in all of Japan will do anything to have her. Kyo and Misao were child hood friends and she knew that he was a demon, but she still loved him despite that. When he moves away and suddenly returns 10 years later, Misao cannot remember all her memories of their childhood and the promise of marriage with him. But now she has doubts and hates (its a love and hate relationship you can say) him for being a demon. She doubts that he actually cared for her the way she cares for him, and all he wants from her is her blood, her energy, and will. "If a demon drinks her blood, he is granted a long life. If he eats her flesh, he gains eternal youth. And if he makes her his bride, his clan will prosper..." The plot, the story line, everything about it was great, right down to the drawings! Everything was perfect. It drew me in and refused to relinquish it's hold until I was finished. It was a great read! I highly enjoyed it! I can hardly sit still! I want to run to the nearest bookstore and buy a copy of the next book!

After her sixteenth birthday, the demons who usually weren't anything more than playful poltergeists have turned downright deadly. They want to consume her powers or force her hand in marriage. Meanwhile, childhood friend and first love Kyo, has returned to town and has promised to save her from the demons. Provided she agrees to sleep with him and become his bride, that is. It doesn’t help that she doesn’t remember much about him from her childhood, such as that he’s a tengu demon and leader of his clan. There is just something so cute and addictive about the characters of BLACK BIRD. I have an obscene crush on both Kyo and Misao, and Kyo’s six-year-old Tengu servant, Taro, is flat-out adorable. He’s all that is chibi and cuddle worthy. I will cry if he ever grows out of the cuteness. It was entertaining as hell learning the ins and outs of these characters. Plot wise, BLACK BIRD has the same type of cliche story line of other popular shojo, but as a die-hard fan of all that is cute and shojo, I find I don't mind. It was highly entertaining and I plan to continue reading more from the Black Bird series.

Thanks to Kat Stark for her review! For years, I've been looking for this manga ever since an old friend introduced me to the series and it's not because I want to read it again, but because of the soft porn and the silly characters were worth discussing with my sister. She loves reading manga, so I thought she might have read this, but it didn't jog any memories for her. All in all, Black Bird was definitely one of those guilty-pleasure reads and I only made it up to Vol. 6 before I gave up. I wo Thanks to Kat Stark for her review! Amanda, WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO YOURSELF? First of all, she gets attacked and saved by this piece of shit, Kyo, two times in one chapter. Like damn. Can it get more fast-paced and stupid than that? YES, unfortunately it can. Because the first thing he tells her upon meeting each other after 10 years is that she's going to be his bride. Who decided? He did, of course. Why should she have a saying in this? It's not like it's her life or anything. Motherfucker, sit the fuck down. If you don't think any of this shit is bad enough to make you want to throw the book against the wall or use it to lighten fires and dance around them while shouting that this book is shit to the sky, then please do know that there's more. Dude's licking her all over... While she's asleep... While she tells him over and over to not fucking touch her and stay the fuck away. What does he do? Touch her and lick her anyway because it's so hot and sexy. Assault asshole, assault. Does the word consent ring a bell? The lawyer in me is boiling. The lawyer in me wants to send this dumbfuck to court and crush him. But then the lawyer in me remembers that he's fictional and that she is still in the second year of Law School so yeah. Can't be done. After all the stupid cringeworthy licking- we have this other idiot coming to claim oh-so-special Misao as his bride. Tells her he's going to assault her as much as he can once he gets rid of competition and stupid bullshit like that. Is this seriously supposed to be romantic? Now I know I am the last person to talk about romance but GOD NO. This is shit. If anyone considers it romantic then please do meditate for a while. It might help. This ain't some kink or anything, it is pure assault. FUCK YOU KYO FUCK YOU NEW GUY FUCK EVERYONE WHO THINK THIS IS OKAY FUCK YOU My sister warned me. She warned me to stay away, but I said how bad could it be? SUPER BAD OBVIOUSLY. And guess what? I have 15 volumes of this crazy shit and they'll hunt me for not reading them. Someone tell me they get to their senses and it doesn't get worse. Is there light in the end of these 18-volume tunnel?

I really wish there were more supernatural manga that wasn’t flat out shojo because way too much of that genre is far too stupid-romantic for me. I knew that going into this, but like always I held out hope. I have no idea why. This is a cookie cutter shojo paranormal romance with a heroine who spends all her time blushing and being rescued. Sigh. And it doesn’t help I’m reading at least three other manga with this same plot (though mostly sans the romance). Misao Harada can see spirits. Naturally no one else in her high school can and they just think she’s a weird girl who falls over nothing and talks to herself. Harada had a friend when she was a child and she loved him and still wants to see him again. Sure enough, she gets attacked by spirits and she is saved by Kyo, her childhood friend. It turns out that he’s a tengu, a spirit, who can heal her wounds with his tongue (okay now we all know why I bought this). Harada is a special girl. If a demon marries her, he’ll become super strong. Just eating her (or draining some of her energy as Kyo is doing when he licks her). Kyo, naturally isn’t just her long lost friend, he is determined to make her his bride. The rest of the manga is her getting attacked, Kyo having to save her or his competition a Kitsune, does. Harada does a lot of blushing and we get a lot of pseudo-sexual scenes and a few potential rapists. I know there are a lot of readers who like the alpha male riding to the rescue type of stories. I’m not a big fan. Kyo is an interesting character but Harada does nothing for me so I’m probably not going further with this one.

Note: This review is for the entire series. I’ll only do individual reviews for a series when it has 5 volumes or less or I've received a copy in exchange for an honest review. Black Bird ended up just being an okay series for me that I think could have been told in less than 18 volumes. There was a lot of potential with the demon and senka maiden mythology, but it just never quite lived up to my expectations. I wanted more action, but instead I got more mushy, over sexed romance. There was a lot of potential with the demon and senka maiden mythology, but it just never quite lived up to my expectations. I wanted more action, but instead I got more mushy, over sexed romance. I liked the demon clans. Those characters were somewhat interesting, but I really couldn't bring myself to muster much affection for our MC's. Misao was whiny and had no life outside of Kyo. What's the point of the senka maiden if she can't do anything other than obsess over Kyo? I was just completely disappointed with the direction her story went in. Kyo was only slightly better. He had that whole demon clan leader thing going on, but...meh. All in all, the plot for this was weak. It never really goes anywhere and the ending was a let down. I thought it was such a cop out for the writer to go back on everything stated about the senka maiden and certain circumstances in previous volumes. Perhaps if more effort had been put into it, I could have bought into it.

I picked it up and let it be known that I did some damage that day. They didn't even have a big enough for all my purchases. But anyway, I brought my books home and arranged them on my bookshelves. So after reading normal fiction with a paranormal edge. I decided I wanted to read a manga and since it was also paranormal, I picked it up. I am so glad I did. From the cover, I thought it was going to be angst 24/7, it wasn't. I'd say it was like 80% angst, but it also has humor. Which is crucial in how much I like a any series, whether it be manga or normal fiction. I was already interested in demons, but this book makes me want to learn more. In fact after I finished reading this volume, I went and looked up tengu , which is like a Japanese bird/human hybrid demon. So in conclusion. I have found yet another series that I will be adding to my reading list. Thanks to a friend on LJ for mentioning this to me. My wallet blames you! Jk

But what I loved most was that I did not feel overpowered by them. Each had their own personality... their own traits. So by the end of the novel, it was easy to remember each of them for their own special reasons. Graphics: Black Bird is a beautifully drawn novel. All the characters and scenery are just wonderful to look at. This is one of those novels that I would just love to jump into it and visit. Due to some sexual content and violence / gore, this manga is rated YA, and may not be suitable for readers under 16.

I'm not one to reivew manga, although I'm a manga crazed person. I live, breath and draw manga, but for some reason this one wasn't up to par as some of the others I have read. The artwork is pretty enough, but I felt like I could have been reading a manga like version of Twilight, except with demons. Maybe there will be more to it...I've only read the 1st volume, and lately I haven't been in the mood for manga...sad I know. Never before have I wanted to give someone a hardcore, near-fatal wedgie as much as I do now. Forgettable manga, and with horrible characters.
