Goldie Vance volume 4 did a lot of the things I really wanted to see come out of Goldie Vance. Jackie Ball's art style continues to be solid but I'm still not totally on board with it (this does come from my bias Williams being one of my favorite artists ever). The story focuses on Diane and Goldie fighting, they don't ever kiss in this issue but it is very clearly and explicitly them in a relationship with other very clearly queer characters. Still because there is a ton of build and this issue Goldie Vance volume 4 did a lot of the things I really wanted to see come out of Goldie Vance. Still because there is a ton of build and this issue beyond it's mystery is an issue about Diane (as volume three as about Sugar) and I feel like there just coulda been this bit more. Maybe a bit more desire from Diane's end because you see Golide over the top for her but something just kinda feels off perhaps because she looks older then Golide. This is a great mystery for kids that is still fun for adults even if there isn't really a bunch of layers to solve. The payoff and personal arc for Golide were very satisfying and the art animates it super well. The color work from Elle Power continues to be really good too really painting the diversity of the world (even if all I can think about when giving a second of critical thought is the time period and what this means but doesn't seem to mean). Anyway, I say if you liked any volume of Goldie Vance you'll enjoy this one a lot.

Another great mystery & where is Volume 5 already? Goldie gets ahead of herself in this one & lets her emotions & biases jeopardize the case, her friends & relationships, & her reputation. Can she pull it together in time to foil the KGB & prove she is the detective she says she is? Of course! This is Goldie 💜 But it looks like while her relationships & reputation are stronger than ever, her enemies are banding together as well. I can't wait for Volume Five to come out Another great mystery & where is Volume 5 already? I don't want to rate this yet cos I haven't figured out how to feel about it. The change in artist was seamless, but the writing........was not great. There aren't a whole lot of words in comics, so if I find myself skimming because the writing is boring, that's a very bad sign.

This may be my favorite GOLDIE VANCE volume yet! These comics are just so much fun, with the most charming characters.

Goldie is on another case, this one featuring the huge Music Festival in town. Only this time she lets her jealousy get in the way and nearly misses the true villain in town. Engaging and charming as always, though it felt a little flat to me. Could be the new writer settling in. But the art was amazing as always--I want to wear Goldie's little collared sleeveless top and have my hair looking so adorable as hers!! Can't wait to see more with the Hummingbirds band, too. While no longer being scripted or drawn by the original creators (although original writer Hope Larson gets credit for the story in this volume), Goldie Vance continues to be a really fun teen mystery series. In terms of representation, it's very refreshing to see a series that features a non-white, non-male, non-heterosexual heroine without drawing any particular attention to any of those facts. Beyond that, this is a really good story. While, on the one hand, pitting Goldie and her friends against a Russian spy plot to disrupt America's infrastructure seems a bit bigger and broader than previous adventures, the energy and fun in the script, art, pacing, and characterization keeps things feeling believable. Another great installment in a great series.

The adorable adventures of Goldie Vance, teen detective continue in this volume and the positive representation of minorities continues to be a strength of this series. Even though attitudes toward people of colour and LGBTQIA identities would have been quite different in the 1960's I'm glad that this series eschews realism and historical accuracy for idealism and fun.

To use a phrase not of my generation that I cannot stand: I literally can't even with this series. I love everything about this series. The setting is perfect, the mysteries are fun, the characters are charming and likeable, the art design is delightful. It lets me know the story of Goldie Vance isn't done yet and I couldn't be happier about it. But one thing does stick in my craw that is not explained: Goldie's Mom. Would some please explain to me the mermaid club she works at??? It is established in Vol. 1 that its clearly a costume. So how the hell does she (and the other mermaids for that matter) stay the hell under water??? In this one there is clear shot of her and her coworkers in the tank "working" and there are no breathing tubes, no air tanks, nothing? Is this some earlier iteration of Zanarkand or something? Can people just breathe water without issue and they rent out the club for Blitzball matches on the weekends? Of course not, because Goldie needed a diving suit in an earlier volume. I DON'T UNDERSTAND. 4 stars.

This was a good one (re: not great). I appreciated how woke the GN was. Gender fluid characters, LGBTQ leads, every race proving they're smarts and how great they can be at their jobs--without any of it feeling forced. That said, I thought the Scooby Doo-yness of it was a bit too formulaic. Like how many times do I have to read/see a series where the detective makes you think it's one person and then OMG it's actually someone else! Isn't there a new way to catch the real criminal by now? BUT, I This was a good one (re: not great). I appreciated how woke the GN was. Isn't there a new way to catch the real criminal by now? BUT, I could definitely see me reading this to Luca at a later date, maybe from the beginning. It's way less POW BAM then Hardy Boys, which I like (even if there was a gun involved) and way more Nancy Drew/PG-rated (note: not G, bc of said gun). And while I didn't get some references due to not reading previous volumes it didn't feel totally necessary for me to start at the beginning.

I liked the twists in this one and how the mysteries of each volume build on each other. I love the illustrations by Elle Powers! It was a great decision to have her on this book. The characters have good continuity and expressions.

Goldie is at it again - this time solving a conspiracy with the KGB that threatens to take down the Rockin' the Beach Music Festival coming to town. Because of course there are Russian spies hiding out in St. Pascal, Florida. Leave it to the teenage girl detective!

Great addition to a strong series. I love the developing relationship between Goldie and Diane - they are definitely a couple and starting to fight like one as they work out their insecurities. The art is sweet and approachable, and the mystery is colorful and fun to watch Goldie and her friends solve.
